Canine Rehab Program
Wendy Davis
NECRFC is operated by two local veterinarians, certified canine therapists and veterinary technicians. The rehabilitation program provides a comprehensive approach to the well being of the patient while working in conjunction with their primary care veterinarian. Utilizing the latest in therapeutic modalities and canine fitness equipment, programs are offered for pre and post surgery patients, arthritis and pain management, obesity, fitness and recreational exercise.
The facility is comprised of two hydrotherapy pools, an under water treadmill, Jacuzzi, massage therapy, therapeutic ultrasound, electrical stimulation, pulsed magnetic field therapy, laser therapy and hear therapy. The environment, in and out of the water, is temperature controlled, safe and clean. Each patient is given a shower after their treatment and toweled dry. Exercise programs can include stretching, strengthening and corrective conditioning that the owners learn how to provide for their pets at home also.
Many of their patients are recovering from injuries, surgeries, have arthritis and/or degenerative joint disease. They are young and old, active agility dogs and inactive senior dogs. Those doing physical rehabilitation post surgery or injury are able to recover faster, increase range of motion, improve muscle strength and maximize their overall physical function. There is also a newly formed “Swim club” at NECRFC for those dogs that adore the water and allows them to swim all winter long!!
We had our own member “demo dog”, Quizzy, that had been at the facility a few times to show us how all the equipment was used. Our tour guide and Director of NECRFC, Bev Savoie, explained the need for careful assistance with her patients. Many are pets that have not been around water and they may be physically uncomfortable so she and her team are very conscious to their needs. Owners are there to provide support and learn everything they can do at home to continue the rehab and increase their pet’s recovery. It was a great education into the therapeutic world of canine physical rehabilitation!!!
